About Vellarimedu Waterfalls
One of Palakkad’s most rewarding hidden waterfall treks in the Nelliyampathy foothills
Vellarimedu Waterfalls is one of those rare discoveries that rewards those willing to go a little further than the well-worn tourist trail. Nestled in the dense Western Ghats forest in the Nelliyampathy foothills near Kollengode, Palakkad, Vellarimedu is not a waterfall you drive to and park in front of. It is a waterfall you earn - through a trek that takes you through forest cover alive with bird calls, past rocky stream crossings, and into a narrow gorge where the falls reveal themselves in their full, dramatic drop.
The waterfall cascades down through a series of rocky tiers, the water white and powerful during and after the monsoon, crystal-clear and gentle during the winter months. The pool at the base is enclosed by forested slopes on three sides, giving the entire location a quality of a hidden bowl - the outside world completely disappears. The silence here, broken only by the waterfall and the forest, is one of the most complete forms of natural quiet available in Palakkad district.
From Seetharkundu Resorts in Kollengode, Vellarimedu Waterfalls is approximately 15 km - a manageable half-day excursion that our guides lead regularly. The approach combines a scenic drive through the Nelliyampathy foothills with a forest trek that itself passes through some of the most biodiverse terrain in the Western Ghats. This is not a trip for those who want a spectacle from a viewpoint; it is a trip for those who want to be completely inside a landscape.
Why Vellarimedu is Worth the Trek
Most Kerala waterfalls that attract visitors have some degree of tourist infrastructure. Vellarimedu has none. The approach is forest trail; the falls themselves are enclosed by untouched forest; and because access requires effort, visitor numbers remain low even during peak season. If genuine solitude in a dramatic natural setting is what you are seeking, Vellarimedu delivers it completely.
The Trek to Vellarimedu Waterfalls
What to expect on the trail - stage by stage
The trek to Vellarimedu Waterfalls is moderate in difficulty and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours each way depending on pace and group fitness. The trail passes through several distinct terrain types, each with its own character and wildlife opportunities. Our guides from Seetharkundu Resorts know every section of this trail and carry first-aid kits and communication equipment throughout.
Drive from Resort to Trailhead (~15 km, 25 minutes)
The journey from Seetharkundu Resorts passes through Kollengode town and into the plantation landscape at the base of the Nelliyampathy foothills. The trailhead is at the forest edge where the road ends. Park here and begin the forest entry on foot.
Forest Entry - Flat to Gentle Ascent (0–500 m on trail)
The first section enters a transitional forest zone - deciduous trees giving way to denser, moister vegetation as you approach the Nelliyampathy catchment. The trail is well-established underfoot. Bird activity peaks here in early morning. Look for Malabar giant squirrels in the upper canopy.
Rocky Stream Zone - Moderate (500 m–1.2 km)
The trail begins following the stream that feeds Vellarimedu Waterfalls. Stream crossings require care - stepping stones and rocky beds. Water levels vary with season. The sound of moving water accompanies the entire section. The forest deepens and the canopy closes overhead.
Gorge Approach - Steeper (1.2–1.8 km)
The terrain steepens as the trail follows the gorge cut by the stream over millennia. The rocky walls on either side grow taller. The sound of the waterfall becomes audible - the clearest indicator that you are close. This section requires agility and careful foot placement on rocky surfaces.
The Waterfall - Vellarimedu (1.8–2 km)
The gorge opens into the falls basin. The waterfall drops into the enclosed pool with full force during peak season. The spray reaches you from 20 metres. The enclosed rock walls, the forest canopy overhead, and the sound of the falls filling the gorge create one of the most immersive natural settings in Palakkad.

Tips for capturing the gorge, falls, and forest trek
The Falls in the Gorge
The enclosed gorge creates naturally diffused light at the waterfall base - excellent for even exposure without harsh shadows. Use a tripod and 1–4 second shutter for smooth water. The rock walls frame the falls naturally; include them for depth and scale.
Forest Trek Photography
The trail itself is photographically rich - dappled canopy light, stream crossings, mossy rocks, and sudden forest clearing. Shoot the path as a leading line drawing the viewer deeper into the forest. Early morning light on the forest floor (before 9 AM) creates the best conditions.
Waterproofing Your Equipment
Spray from Vellarimedu falls can reach 15–20 metres radius during peak flow. Use a waterproof camera housing or a sealed zip-lock bag as emergency protection. Microfibre cloths for lens cleaning are essential. Back up photos on the return trek before crossing the stream sections.
Wildlife on the Trail
The forest approach is rich in bird and wildlife photo opportunities. Use a telephoto lens for birds in the canopy. Move slowly and quietly. Malabar giant squirrels, endemic sunbirds, and various hornbills are regularly photographed on the Vellarimedu trek approach.
